Here are the most absurd machines of the era that seem like science fiction parodies today:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Ford Nucleon (1958) \u2013 A Mobile Chernobyl
    This car fortunately never made it into mass production, but Ford took it deadly seriously. It was supposed to be powered by a small nuclear reactor in the back.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Why it\u2019s a joke today: The idea that every \u201cknock\u201d in a parking lot threatens to radioactively contaminate the neighborhood is unimaginable today.
    Absurdity: Ford assumed that a car would travel 8,000 kilometers on a single \u201ccharge\u201d of the core.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. BMW Isetta (1955) \u2013 A car with doors instead of a front end

          Bonus fact: In the 1950s, America experimented with cars that had a joystick instead of a steering wheel. Engineers thought the steering wheel was too outdated. However, it turned out that the human brain intuitively looks for the wheel, not the lever, in a crisis situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
