As soon as the tubers sense light, heat or moisture, they think: “Time to grow!”

The “special trick” you’ve probably come across – and which is almost legendary in the world of home economics – concerns your neighbors in the pantry: the apple trick.

How the apple trick works

It sounds paradoxical, since apples are often known for causing other fruits to ripen faster. But with potatoes, the ripening gas ethylene, which apples release (in the right concentration), has the opposite effect:

Effect: Ethylene gas inhibits the growth of potato sprout cells.

Use: Simply place one or two apples directly into the bag or box of potatoes.

The result: The potatoes stay firm and sprout-free for significantly longer.

Why you should keep onions away
While apples are a potato’s best friend, onions are its worst enemy.

Onions absorb moisture from potatoes, causing them to spoil more quickly.

At the same time, the gases released by onions stimulate potato germination.

Rule: Never store onions and potatoes in the same space.

Golden rules of storage
In addition to the apple trick, there are three physical factors that determine success or failure:

Factor Ideal conditions Why?

Light Pitch black Light promotes the formation of solanine (green, toxic spots).

Temperature 4°C to 8°C Too warm = germination. Too cold (refrigerator) = starch turns to sugar (sweet).

Ventilation Airy (linen bag/wooden box) Moisture accumulates in plastic bags, which leads to mold.

What to do if they sprout anyway?

Small sprouts: They can be cut off generously. The potato is still edible.

Long sprouts and wrinkled skin: Caution is advised. The solanine content rises sharply. If the potato is soft and has a lot of green spots, it unfortunately belongs in the compost.

Important note: The apple trick works best in closed but breathable containers (such as a dark wooden box with a lid) so that the ethylene can concentrate.

Want to know the safest way to identify green spots on potatoes and when they really become unhealthy?

Potato sprouts are the natural enemy of every pantry.
