We are talking about gnats (often called “garbage flies” in Slovak) or, worse, invasive cockroaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, most often these are small, furry flies resembling moths (lat. Psychodidae).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Why do they spread from drains?
Drains in bathrooms and kitchens are an ideal incubator for them. They feed on the biofilm (slime) that forms inside the pipe from hair, soap residue and organic waste. There they lay their eggs and from there they fly throughout the house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What to do immediately? (Disposal instructions)
If you notice these insects near the sink or shower, follow these steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mechanical cleaning: Use a \u201cbell\u201d or drain brush to break up the slime deposits. Chemicals often only flow through the slime, but do not destroy the eggs.
Homemade recipe (Ecological way):
Pour 1 cup of baking soda into the drain.
Pour 1 cup of vinegar.
Leave to act for 15-20 minutes and then pour boiling water over it.
Preventive barrier: If you do not use the drains regularly (e.g. in a guest room), flush them once a week. The water in the siphon acts as a natural barrier against insects from the sewer.
Beware of more invasive guests
In Italy, the American cockroach (Periplaneta americana) has also spread more in recent years due to warmer winters. It is larger and enters homes through sewage systems when it seeks moisture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When should you pay attention?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you find droppings resembling ground coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you smell a strange musty smell in the bathroom.
In this case, home remedies are often not enough and it is better to reach for insecticidal gels or call an exterminator.
