Orchids (especially the popular Phalaenopsis) are epiphytic plants that live on trees in nature, feeding on rainwater, which is naturally slightly acidic.

Here are the 3 key benefits that lemon juice brings to your orchid:

Correcting the pH of the water (The secret of acidity)
Most of us use tap water, which is often “hard” and alkaline (rich in limescale). Orchids, on the other hand, prefer a slightly acidic environment (pH between 5.5 and 6.5).

The benefit: The citric acid in lemon neutralizes limescale and lowers the pH of the water.

Result: A plant with the correct pH can absorb nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) much faster. Without this help, the roots can become “stuck” and stop feeding, even if you fertilize them.

Natural barrier against fungi and bacteria
Orchids are extremely susceptible to root rot and bacterial infections that can affect the plant’s crown.

Benefit: Lemon has natural antiseptic and antifungal properties.
Result: A slightly acidic solution creates a hostile environment for mold and fungi to grow in the substrate (bark), keeping the roots firm and a beautiful bright green.

“Gloss” effect and stimulation of photosynthesis
In addition to water, lemon can be used to clean leaves.

Benefit: Wiping the leaves with a cloth soaked in lemon water removes the whitish limescale stains left by misting.
Result: Clean, shiny leaves absorb sunlight better, accelerating photosynthesis. This gives the plant the energy it needs to produce new flower stems.
⚠️ How to do it correctly (Dosage is vital)
Never pour pure lemon juice on the plant! You could burn the roots.

The formula: Add 3-5 drops of lemon juice per liter of water you use for irrigation.
Frequency: Use this mixture once every two or three waterings (not always, to avoid over-acidifying the soil).
Cleaning leaves: Mix a teaspoon of lemon juice in a glass of water, dip a cotton pad in it, wring it out well, and wipe the leaves.
Expert tip: If your orchid has gray roots and flowers that wilt immediately, try soaking it in lemon-laced water for 15 minutes. You’ll see the roots return to emerald green almost instantly.

Have you ever had your orchid’s buds fall off before they even open? This could be due to excess limescale, which lemon can help with. Would you like to know how to stimulate new stem growth?

Watering orchids with a few drops of lemon juice isn’t a bizarre internet myth, but a practice with solid botanical foundations.
