Here’s why you should be careful and when you (maybe) try it:

The foam problem (bubble disaster)
Shampoos are designed to create a rich foam. Detergents and gels, on the other hand, contain substances that control foaming.

What happens: If you add too much shampoo, the foam can start to leak out of the washing machine, block the pump, or confuse the sensors of modern washing machines. The washing machine can get stuck halfway through the cycle because it “thinks” there is still water in the drum.

Shampoo is not a detergent
Grease vs. Sweat: Shampoo is designed to remove sebum from the skin and hair. Classic detergent has a much more aggressive composition to remove stains, dust and bacteria from textile fibers.
Residues in the washing machine: Shampoos often contain silicones and conditioners. These can settle on the walls of the drum and in the hoses, which over time leads to the formation of mold and odors in the washing machine itself.
When to shampoo in the washing machine YES?
If you are in an emergency and have nothing else, use shampoo only under the following conditions:

Just a few drops: A really minimal amount (a teaspoon) is enough to prevent excessive foaming.
Delicate laundry: Shampoo is suitable for wool or silk (hand wash program) because it is gentler on the fibers than regular powder.
Hand wash: Shampoo is excellent here! If you wash your sweater in the sink, the shampoo will leave it soft and fragrant.
Tips for really fragrant laundry (without the risk):
If you want your clothes to smell as intense as after shampooing, try this instead:

Essential oils: Add 5-10 drops of your favorite oil (e.g. lavender or lemon) to the fabric softener compartment along with a little white vinegar.
Herb bags: Put dried lavender in the closet. The scent will last longer than the one from the wash.
Washing machine cleaning: Clothes often don’t smell because the washing machine is dirty inside. Run an empty washing machine at 90°C with citric acid every now and then.
Would you like to know how to make your own eco-friendly fabric softener that will soften and scent your laundry without unnecessary chemicals?

It may sound like a great hack idea from social media at first glance, but before you pour shampoo into the washing machine, here’s a big warning.
