Here’s the method chefs use to keep avocados bright green and fresh for up to several days.

💧 Water trick (for sliced avocados)
If you’re not going to use the whole avocado, do this:

Take an airtight container and fill it with cold water.
Place the remaining half of the avocado (ideally with the pit as well to reduce the area of the cut) in the water, flesh side down.
Seal the container and put it in the refrigerator.
Why does it work? Oxidation (browning) occurs when oxygen reaches the flesh. The water creates a perfect impermeable barrier. When you want to eat it, just remove it and gently pat it dry with a paper towel. It will be as if you just cut it!

🧅 The Onion Secret (if you don’t want water)
If you don’t like the idea of water, there is another “fragrant” trick:

Place a large piece of chopped onion in the container with half of the avocado.
The science behind it: The sulfur fumes from the onion act as a natural preservative and prevent oxidation. The avocado won’t absorb the onion flavor as much as you might fear.
❄️ What if you have too many ripe avocados at once?
If you’ve caught a bargain and suddenly have 5 ripe ones at once, don’t stress.

Refrigerator: A ripe (but still good) avocado will last in the refrigerator for a whole 3-5 days, which almost stops the ripening process.
Freezer: Yes, avocados can be frozen! Blend them with a squeeze of lemon and put them in freezer bags. Perfect for smoothies or spreads (guacamole) at a later time.
💡 Extra tip: How to speed up ripening in 24 hours?
If you need a hard avocado tomorrow, put it in a paper bag with an apple or banana. These fruits release ethylene, which will speed up the ripening of the avocado at a “rocket” speed.

Warning: Never eat an avocado that has noticeable black fibers inside or smells of alcohol/fermentation – that’s beyond the safe limit.

Do you have any avocados at home right now that need rescuing, or are you looking for a recipe for the best homemade Guacamole that won’t turn brown on the table?

If you’re one of those people who buys avocados and then obsessively watches the 5-minute interval between “rock-hard” and “rotten,” this trick will really change your life.
