This is a truly melancholic and accurate observation. House sparrows, once the noisy “synanthropic” inhabitants of our cities, have indeed become dramatically rarer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To sum it up: They can find neither a home nor enough to eat here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are the main reasons why the house sparrow (and with it, many other cavity-nesting birds) is disappearing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. \ud83c\udfd7\ufe0f Housing shortage in the concrete jungle
    The sparrow depends on us, but we’re renovating our buildings to drive them out of their nesting niches.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Modern construction and renovation: These birds traditionally nest in cracks, crevices, under roofs, and in cavities of old buildings. Energy-efficient renovations and airtight new buildings are eliminating these nesting opportunities. The sparrows simply can’t find any more openings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Lack of hiding places: Tidy, sterile gardens and city parks lack dense bushes and hedges where sparrows can seek refuge from predators (such as cats or sparrowhawks).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Sparrows eat seeds, but their young need something else, and this is the main problem:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Insect die-off: Young birds need protein-rich insects (soft food) to survive their first few weeks of life. The use of pesticides in agriculture and excessive cleanliness in gardens have drastically reduced insect populations. No insects = no offspring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Lack of plant food: Wild herbs and grasses, whose seeds adult sparrows eat, are lacking in cities. Large agricultural areas also offer hardly any “waste” grain due to monocultures and efficient harvesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Glass facades: The increasing number of glass facades and large windows poses a deadly threat, as birds don’t recognize the glass panes and fly into them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Cats and other domestic animals: Domestic cats, especially in residential areas, represent a significant threat to the sparrow population. Ironically, humans are saving their buildings from decay, but the consequences for the sparrow, a bird that thrives in human-modified environments, are fatal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
