There is strong scientific evidence suggesting a link between regular consumption of these beverages and an increased risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures.

The Relationship Between Soft Drinks and Bone Loss
The main reason for the risk lies in the ingredients in these beverages. There are two key mechanisms that can affect bone health:

Phosphoric acid: Many soft drinks, especially colas, contain phosphoric acid, which gives them their acidic taste and gives them a longer shelf life. High phosphorus consumption can interfere with the absorption of calcium, the most important component of our bones. When phosphorus levels increase in the body, it attempts to restore balance by leaching calcium from the bones. This weakens bone structure over time.
Sugar and Caffeine: The high sugar content in soft drinks can also indirectly affect bone health. High sugar consumption can increase calcium excretion in the urine. Some studies also suggest that excessive caffeine consumption can inhibit calcium absorption in the intestines and promote its excretion, which also affects bone strength.

Scientific Evidence
Several studies, including one published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, have shown that women who regularly drink cola have lower bone density in their hips. This was not observed with other sugary drinks, suggesting that phosphoric acid is the primary factor.

Have you heard the song?
This doesn’t mean you should avoid soda altogether, but conscious and moderate consumption is crucial. To protect bone health, it is recommended to reduce consumption of sugary drinks and those containing phosphoric acid.

Opt for calcium-rich alternatives: instead, drink milk, calcium-fortified plant-based drinks, calcium-rich mineral water, or green tea.
Exercise: Regular physical activity, especially weight-bearing exercises such as walking, jogging, or strength training, strengthens bones.
Get enough vitamin D: Vitamin D is the only way to increase your calcium intake. It’s absorbed through sunlight and is found in foods like oily fish and eggs.
How did babies eat a cold meal?
