However, the reality is much more nuanced than that! The belief that “butter is always better” is an old perception that is worth rethinking.

Do You Think Butter Is Always Better? Think Again! 🤯
Both butter and margarine have their advantages and disadvantages, and the choice largely depends on your health, dietary preferences, and how you want to use it.

Butter – Tradition and Taste
Butter is made from cream, a natural dairy product.

Advantages:

Taste: It has an undeniably rich, creamy taste that many people like, especially when spread on bread or in certain pastries.
Naturalness: Considered a minimally processed product.
Vitamins: Contains fat-soluble vitamins like vitamins A, D, E, and K.
Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA): Contains smaller amounts of CLA, which some research has linked to immune system support and metabolic benefits.
Cons:
Saturated Fats: High in saturated fats, which can raise “bad” LDL cholesterol and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Cholesterol: Contains cholesterol, which may be detrimental for those with high cholesterol.
Milk Protein/Lactose: Contains milk protein and milk sugar (lactose), which may be a problem for those with milk allergies or lactose intolerance (although lactose-free butters are available).
Smoke point: It has a lower smoke point than many oils or margarines, which means it burns and goes rancid more quickly when fried at higher temperatures.
Margarine – The Modern Alternative
Margarine is made from vegetable oils that are solidified through various processes (e.g. hydrogenation) and mixed with water, emulsifiers, vitamins (often A, D, E) and flavourings.

Benefits:

Unsaturated fatty acids: It contains a higher proportion of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega-3 and omega-6), which may contribute to lowering cholesterol levels and cardiovascular health.
Cholesterol-free: Since it is plant-based, it does not contain cholesterol.
Vitamins: It is often fortified with vitamins (A, D, E).
Smoke point: Some types have a higher smoke point, making them better able to withstand high-temperature frying.
Spreadability: It is easy to spread even when cold.
Lactose-free/Vegan: Many margarines are lactose-free and can be included in vegan diets.
Cons:

Processed: Margarine is a processed food, and the manufacturing process (especially the old hydrogenation processes) may have resulted in trans fats.
Trans fats (a problem from the past): Older manufacturing technologies may have created harmful trans fats. However, it is important to know that modern margarines (especially in the EU, where strict regulations are in place, such as a ban on trans fats above 2g/100g fat content) no longer contain any or very little trans fats. Therefore, the argument that “margarine is bad for you” is now largely outdated.
Omega-6 fatty acid ratio: Some margarines may contain too many omega-6 fatty acids compared to omega-3, which can be inflammatory in the body if the ratio is out of whack. It is worth looking for varieties enriched with omega-3.
Additives: May contain emulsifiers, dyes, flavors.
When to choose which one?
There is no clear “winner”, the choice depends on individual needs and use:

From a health perspective:
If you have high cholesterol or are prone to cardiovascular disease, margarine (especially a variety low in trans fats and saturated fatty acids, possibly enriched with omega-3) may be a better choice.
If you are looking for a more natural, minimally processed food and consume it in moderation, butter can also be included in a healthy diet.
The most important thing is TOTAL: The quality of the entire diet is much more important than whether you use butter or margarine. A lot of processed foods, excessive sugar and salt intake pose a much greater risk.
For Baking and Cooking:

For cakes and pastries: Butter gives a richer flavor and a crumblier texture. However, many margarines are also excellent for baking, especially higher-fat margarines.
For frying and cooking: Oils or margarines with a higher smoke point hold up better at high temperatures. Butter is more prone to burning due to its milk protein content. Ghee (clarified butter), on the other hand, has a higher smoke point.
For spreading: Margarine is easier to spread when taken out of the refrigerator.
The bottom line: Don’t take the “one is bad, the other is good” approach! Read the label, look for margarines with low saturated fat, trans fat-free, and enjoy butter in moderation! A balanced, varied diet is the key to health.

Many people tend to associate butter exclusively with luxury, naturalness, and better taste, while margarine is treated as some kind of “artificial”, “less healthy” alternative.
