They manifest as a dull, intense pain, often on both sides of the head, which can feel like a band around the head. The cause is usually tension in the muscles of the neck, shoulders, and scalp, triggered by stress, poor posture, or eye strain. The nerves in these tense muscles send pain signals.

Fibromyalgia-like pain (undiagnosed): Many people experience diffuse, chronic muscle and joint pain, as well as generalized tenderness, without a diagnosis of fibromyalgia. This pain can be caused by increased pain sensitivity in the central nervous system (central sensitization) or by persistent stress and psychological tension that affect pain processing. Burning Feet (No Neuropathy): A burning sensation in the feet can be extremely unpleasant. If neurological causes, such as neuropathy (nerve damage due to diabetes, etc.), are ruled out, it may be due to an overreaction of small nerve fibers, poor circulation due to tension, or even psychosomatic factors.

Phantom Pain After Amputation (Early Stage): Although the amputation has a clear cause, phantom pain itself is a phenomenon of the nervous system. Nerve endings in the stump continue to send signals to the brain, which interprets them as pain in the body part that is no longer present. In the early stages, this may occur without major complications.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) – Abdominal Pain: Abdominal pain and cramping in irritable bowel syndrome are often caused by increased sensitivity of the intestinal nerves. The intestine itself is not pathologically altered, but the nerves become hypersensitive to normal stimuli, leading to pain, bloating, and changes in bowel movements. Pain from chronic stress/anxiety: Prolonged stress and anxiety can put the nervous system in a state of high arousal. This can lead to a variety of pain symptoms, such as muscle pain, chest tightness (without heart problems), headaches, or abdominal pain, as the brain processes pain signals more intensely or even generates them.

Toothache after a filling (without inflammation): Sometimes a tooth can remain sensitive to pressure or cold for weeks or months after a new filling, even without inflammation or damage. This may be a temporary irritation of the dental nerves that will resolve over time.
Pain from muscle tension (myofascial pain): Muscles can become permanently tense due to overuse, poor posture, or stress, forming so-called trigger points. These points are hypersensitive and can cause local pain or radiate to other parts of the body (referred pain), even if the muscles themselves are not structurally damaged. Pain is transmitted by nerve fibers. Chronic back pain (no structural cause): Many people with chronic back pain don’t have a clear structural cause (such as a herniated disc or spinal stenosis). It’s often assumed that central nervous system sensitization, muscle imbalances, or psychological factors play a role in exacerbating or maintaining pain perception.

Important note:
While this pain isn’t a “disease” in the traditional sense, it’s real and debilitating. It’s always advisable to see a doctor if the pain is persistent or severe to rule out serious causes. Once this is done, treatments targeting the nervous system (such as stress management, physical therapy, mindfulness, relaxation techniques, or cognitive behavioral therapy) can be very helpful.

Have you experienced these types of pain or would you like to learn more about specific treatment options?

9 Types of Nerve Pain That Aren’t DiseasesHere are nine examples of common pain whose cause often lies in the functioning of the nervous system, rather than an underlying pathology: […]

[4

post-13710","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-nteresting
["GET
