The oil filling cap, often treated so loosely or even thrown, actually performs a much more important function than we would think at first glance. Your colleague gave a valuable tip!

Real feature of oil filler cap: more than a cap 😮
The oil filling cap is much more than a simple cap on the engine of the engine oil. It plays a key role in engine health and long life.

Here’s your main functions and why it’s so important:

The sealing of the engine
The most obvious, yet basic function: the oil charging cap provides a seal in the engine crank. This prevents:
Dirt, dust and foreign materials enter the engine and oil contamination. Even the smallest particles can cause significant damage to sensitive motor parts over time.

Motor oil splashing or evaporating during engine. Without a tight seal, the engine would not only cause oil leakage, but would also cause significant mess in the engine compartment.

Maintaining proper oil pressure and lubrication
The engine is a closed system and the proper oil pressure is critical for lubricating all moving parts. The oil filler cap will help maintain this pressure.

The leaking or missing oil charging cap can lead to pressure loss in the system. This, in turn, worsens the oil’s ability to effectively lubricate all parts that can lead to increased wear, overheating and ultimately damage to the engine.

Ventilation (often integrated)
Many modern oil filling caps are designed to play a role in ventilation of the engine. This is often done as part of the PCV (positive crank housing ventilation) system:

During combustion, gases are formed that can enter the crankcase. These gases should be ventilated to increase pressure and damage the seals.

The oil filling cap can be part of this ventilation system by allowing controlled gas exchange while preventing impurities from entering.

Protection against moisture
Condensation can be formed inside the engine, especially on a colder climate or short roads when the engine does not fully reach the operating temperature. The properly equipped oil filling cap will help prevent further moisture from contamination of oil and lead to corrosion.
What happens if the oil filler cap is missing or defective?
Oil leaks: the most obvious problem. Motor oil splashes, which can lead to dangerous oil leaks and slippery engine compartment.

Dirt: powder, dirt, leaves and other foreign materials can enter the oil directly and damage the engine.
Motor damage: In the long run, poor lubrication, overheating and dirt can lead to severe motor damage, which may require costly repairs or even motor replacement.

Environmental impact: Leaking oil is harmful to the environment and can be on the road.
This is a small but extremely important component that should never be underestimated or discarded! Regular checks and integrity checks are part of a good engine care.

Did your colleague share other interesting details with you?

It is really surprising that some of the unobtrusive, everyday things can be good, especially when it comes to car parts!
