The supermarket test

Unfortunately, you’re not alone in this problem! Counterfeiting extra virgin olive oil is a serious and widespread problem all over the world. Often, products labeled as “extra virgin” are actually made with inferior quality olive oil, mixed with other vegetable oils (such as sunflower oil) or even diluted with “lampante” olive oil, which is unfit for human consumption.

Why does this happen?
The price of olive oil is constantly rising, which makes counterfeiting attractive to scammers, as it is an easy way to make big profits. Tricks are often used, such as:

Mixing with cheaper oils: Sunflower oil or other flavorless oils are mixed with olive oil and then colored with chlorophyll or carotenoids to resemble real extra virgin olive oil.

Use of “Lampante” olive oil: This is a low-quality olive oil, with high acidity and organoleptic defects, and is therefore unfit for consumption. It is refined or mixed with other oils.
Incorrect labeling: The designation “extra virgin” has strict quality standards (e.g. acidity below 0.8%, perfect organoleptic characteristics). Counterfeiters simply put this label on non-compliant products.

False origin: Olive oils are often labeled as Italian, Spanish or Greek, but in fact they come from another country and were bottled there.
How to identify fake extra virgin olive oil in the supermarket?
Although it is difficult to be 100% sure without a laboratory test, there are signs to look for:

The label and information
“Extra virgin” label: Always look for this label. Terms such as “light”, “pure”, “refined olive oil” do not indicate extra virgin quality.
Date and place of collection: Look for the date of collection on the label. The fresher the better. Extra virgin olive oil should preferably be consumed within 2 years of harvest. The country and region of origin are also important.

Quality marks: Look for quality certifications, such as the PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) or PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) logos. These represent strict controls and guarantee authenticity.

Price: If the price is too low compared to the “extra virgin” label, it may raise suspicions. Producing quality extra virgin olive oil is expensive.

Packaging
Dark glass or opaque container: Extra virgin olive oil is sensitive to light and heat, which can degrade its quality. For this reason, it is usually stored in dark glass bottles or opaque metal containers. Avoid transparent or plastic bottles. Taste and aroma (at home, during tasting)
Authentic extra virgin olive oil:

Aroma: Fresh, fruity, reminiscent of green grass, olives, tomatoes or almonds.
Flavor: Pleasantly fruity, slightly bitter and with a slight spicy aftertaste in the throat (a sign of the presence of polyphenols). Should not be rancid, metallic, vinegary or musty.
Texture: Silky, but not greasy or heavy.
Counterfeit/low-quality olive oil:
Often lacks the characteristic flavor and aroma.
May have a rancid, musty, moldy, metallic or crayon-like flavor.
No pungent aftertaste.

The “refrigerator test” (not 100%, but helps)
Condensation/solidification in the refrigerator: Some experts say that real extra virgin olive oil can become cloudy and thicken in the refrigerator, while counterfeit olive oil does not. However, this is not a scientifically proven and reliable method, since the composition of the oil (fatty acid profile) greatly influences this process, and some extra virgin olive oils can remain liquid in the cold. However, this method can provide a quick and practical guide for you to do at home.
Why is this important?
Extra virgin olive oil differs not only in taste and aroma, but also in its health benefits. Rich in antioxidants, polyphenols and monounsaturated fatty acids, which contribute to cardiovascular health, have anti-inflammatory effects and protect cells. Counterfeit oils do not offer these benefits, or only offer them in minimal quantities.

In general, it is worth buying from a reliable source, from a well-known and reputable brand, and paying attention to the information on the label. If the price of a product is suspiciously low or the taste/aroma does not live up to expectations, it is worth being suspicious

Unfortunately, you’re not alone in this problem!
